The IRD (Institute of Research for Development) is a French research organisation, original and unique on the European development research scene.

Emphasizing interdisciplinarity, the IRD has focused its research for over 65 years on the relationship between man and its environment, in Africa, Mediterranean, Latin America, Asia and the French tropical overseas territories. Its research, training and innovation activities are intended to contribute to the social, economic and cultural development of southern countries.

The Unit “Food and Nutrition Research in the Global South” (UMR204 Nutripass) works on the development of strategies to prevent malnutritions and their consequences on human health. Research focus on malnutritions encountered in Southern countries, such as micronutrient deficiencies and chronic diseases.

IRD will coordinate the project and the WP2, and will work in the other WPs. IRD will share its expertise on food consumption measurement (WP1), metagenomics and microbial ecology (WP2) and analysis of bioaccessibility and bioavailability of micronutrients (WP3).

IRD's researchers have complementary expertise and will be involved in the different WPs:

  • WP1: Edwige Landais and Claire Mouquet-Rivier have expertise on the measurement of nutrients intake through surveys and database analysis.
  • WP2: Christèle Humblot and Jean-Pierre Guyot have expertise on microbiology and microbial ecology of CBFF.
  • WP3: Youna Hemery has expertise on micronutrient biochemistry and measure of bioaccessibility. Caroline Laurent has expertise on bioavailability studies (cell cultures and animal studies).
  • WP4: Sylvie Avallone has expertise on the organoleptic evaluation and optimization of food products.
